Wasp nest removal in Rotterdam: where nests turn up
Each colony starts in spring with a single queen, who builds a walnut-sized paper nest from chewed wood fibre. Left alone, it swells over the summer into a ball packed with workers. Wasps look for somewhere dry, sheltered and dark, and in Rotterdam homes that usually means:
- a cavity wall, entered through an open weep hole in the brickwork
- under roof tiles or behind the fascia boards of terraced houses
- roller-shutter boxes and air vents in flats and walk-up blocks
- garden sheds, summer houses and compost bins
- underground, for example in an old mouse burrow in the lawn
If wasps keep flying in and out of the same small gap, the nest is right behind it. The earlier in the season you spot it, the smaller the job.
How we deal with wasps
First we check what is actually flying. Hoverflies, honey bees and wasps are easily confused, and wasps are the only one of the three we treat as a matter of course. Then we locate the entrance and assess how to reach the nest, even when it sits high up behind the gutter of a walk-up block.
We prefer to treat late in the day, when almost the whole colony is home. A certified technician applies a professional product into the entrance or directly into the nest, and by the next day the gap has usually gone quiet. An old nest is not reused the following year. Timing matters more here than in most jobs we handle as part of our pest control in Rotterdam.
Bee nest removal in Rotterdam
We do not exterminate honey bees. They are essential pollinators, and a swarm or bee nest can often be relocated. A humming cluster hanging from a branch, fence or bike rack in spring or early summer is usually a swarm resting on its way to a new home. A beekeeper (imker) can collect it. If a colony has already moved into a cavity wall or chimney, we talk you through the options and point you towards a beekeeper.
Bumblebees are best left in peace where possible. A bumblebee nest in a bird box or under the decking is small, its residents are placid and the colony dies off naturally after the summer. Not sure what you are looking at? Describe colour, size and flight path when you call, and we will tell you honestly whether anything needs doing.
Hornet nest removal in Rotterdam
Two kinds of hornet can turn up in Rotterdam. The European hornet is large, reddish-brown and yellow, and nests in hollow trees, sheds, lofts and big nest boxes. It is less aggressive than its size suggests, but disturbing the nest is asking for trouble. The Asian hornet is smaller and darker, with yellow legs and a single orange band on the abdomen. It preys on honey bees and in summer builds a large nest, often high up in a tree.
Never try to remove a hornet nest yourself, least of all from a ladder or with a long pole. We identify the species and treat the nest, working at height where necessary. If you spot an Asian hornet or a suspicious nest, please also report it on waarneming.nl. That helps researchers track its spread.
What to do – and not do – about a wasp nest
DIY wasp nest removal looks simple but often goes wrong. A shop-bought spray will not reach a nest inside a cavity wall, and banging, poking or blocking the hole only makes the colony more aggressive. If you are allergic to stings, stay well clear.
- Keep windows on the nest side shut, or fit an insect screen.
- Leave the entrance open: trapped wasps chew a new way out, sometimes indoors.
- Do not leave squash, fruit or rubbish out, especially on a balcony or roof terrace.
